Top Tips for Job Seekers, Especially New Graduates
Congratulations to the Class of 2023! As a business owner, I am often asked what I look for in job candidates. Last year, I reviewed well over 1000 resumes (one position was over 250 alone!). So, how to stand out? Here are some tips:
- Make sure your resume is updated and tailored to the job. This seems obvious but I often see resumes that are in no way relevant and seemingly a waste of time. Bonus Tip: use the bullet points in the job posting and answer how you fit the role (Q&A style!). Second Bonus Tip: save your resume with your first and last name (e.g. JaneSmithResume.doc).
- Research the company- visit their website, find them on social media, and include an item that stands out on the cover letter. Show the company you are truly interested in them. I have an easter egg on our website for just this purpose.
- Use social media for your benefit! Example: LinkedIn- find the hiring manager or someone in mgmt within the department and send a personal note to them (not just a form fill!). Ask about the position, why you think you are a good fit, and if it’s not too much trouble to suggest who you should contact. Bonus Tip- make sure your own social media is positive as well! (This could be its own post!!)
- LinkedIn, Indeed, Email, etc., understand how they work! From the employer side, we are given tools to reach out to each candidate via the platforms. Please keep a close eye for potential communications and respond QUICKLY! There have been numerous times when a candidate was slow to respond and lost out on an opportunity. Not only did they lose out on this position but possibly on future ones as well. If you apply, be ready to respond!
- Interview- be prepared! Practice interviewing and be ready with thoughtful questions. These questions are a great way to set yourself apart from other candidates. There can be a test or task to complete. This helps the interviewer get a greater understanding if the candidate is the right fit. Don’t let these requests deter you.
- Last but certainly not least – Send a thank you note after the interview. I wrote a post about this subject on LinkedIn recently and was unfortunately not surprised by the overwhelming response. It’s worth repeating: sending a thank you note after an interview for someone who took the time to help you gain employment is priceless. Email is fine but a handwritten note stands out even more!
Honestly, I could probably write another whole page of suggestions and maybe one day I’ll add to this list. This is a good start for now and I hope it helps current and future job seekers.
Best wishes,
Ron
